Before you rely on any of this
This game is for education. It shows how a stock market index moved in the past and how one set of choices would have done against staying invested. It is not investment advice, it is not a recommendation to buy or sell any security, and it is not a tool for deciding what to trade or when. Every result is hypothetical. Historical sequences describe what past markets did, not what future markets will do. Past performance is no guarantee of future returns, and investing involves a risk of loss.
How the numbers are built: monthly average levels of the S&P 500 index from 1950 on (the Shiller data set). Both lines use price only: no dividends, and cash earns no interest. Your moves take effect at that month's level. The results include no advisory fees, commissions, trading costs or taxes, each of which would lower them. Nobody can invest directly in an index. Index data come from publicly available sources believed to be reliable; their accuracy is not guaranteed. The random-moves figures come from 200,000 simulated players in this same game, each making one to three sells and buy-backs at random months in a random 36-month period. The game runs in your browser and stores nothing you enter.
